Is streamyx 4Mbps worth it?

Postby cic.lemur » Tue Mar 18, 2008 12:00 pm

Hi, just want some advice, is 4Mbps streamyx package worth it, or it is just like using 1Mbps for watching Youtube and download from Rapidshares?

Should be better but much depends on the quality of your line anyway.

When downloading from free file hosters, you need to remember that for their free service, rapidshare most likely throttles per thread download speed (free users are limited to one download thread per download link). This is so that sufficient bandwidth is left for their "premium" users. If you are a premium user, and have a 4Mb line, you should be downloading at close to 500KB/s, give or take 5%.

You also need to check whether the 4Mb package provides you a static or dynamic IP. Static IPs are no good for downloading from rapidshare (or any other "free" file hoster) unless you are a premium user.

Anyway, rumour has it that the 4Mb packages are not yet capped at 4Mb, some users have reported getting up to 6Mb. And of course you need to be located less than 3km from the exchange, otherwise, you're SOL.

Unless you're a heavy downloader, there's no point going for the 4Mb package.

Here's a hint on how I watch youtube videos - I use a site called videodownloadx to convert the video to AVI. The site converts the videos and provides you a link to download the file for offline viewing, and downloading from videodownloadx is much faster than youtube.

Hi, newb. Thanks for the tips. How much is the 4Mbps package cost a month anyway?

ps I like your signature, hehe.

No problem.

There's a promotion going on currently called the "combo packages". It combines your phone line and Streamyx bill into one. Phone line is free, no need to pay the monthly RM25 compared to current subscribers.

Clicky me. Full details of pricing and T&Cs (notice the minimum contract ) are all here.

Finally, with a 4mbps line, it's rather pointless to subscribe to it just because of rapidshare premium. You'll likely finish your daily quota of 5Gb somewhere between 3 to 5 hours. Therefore, the remainder of the 21 hours will be a waste to have a 4mbps line and nothing to download. So, unless you also have a megaupload premium (really unlimited ), it may be an overkill. Even if you had so many premium accounts, you'll run out of things to download, unless you're planning on becoming a major supplier of "master" copies to software/movie pirates

There are also reports that the 4mbps lines are not yet subject to P2P throttling by TMNet. So, some people are downloading at speeds in excess of 400KB/s using BitTorrent clients on these lines

the first time they unofficially announce that tmnet is not throttling so that when more and more people sign up to that package and sign a deal of limited time before terminating then they will start to cap the bandwidth.. that way they earn your money while u left with downloading at a speed of your 1mbps package..

Right now I am paying RM88 for Streamyx 1 MB + 25 = RM 113.
Their combo package for 1 MB line is RM110.
I save 3 measly bucks. Big deal.
4 MB line? Without a guaranteed minimum quality/performance I am not touching this with a barge pole.

I see not many people have subscribed to 4mbps, judging by the poll ^^'

I'm not a big downloader, don't have any premium accounts, just want to get those occassional blue clips from rapidshare, hehe.

Thanks for the link to the promotion package, newb, I saw something similar when I googled but it didn't have that nice table at the bottom, just a page filled with bugers, chips and fries, made me very blur.

Still if 4Mbps package is only RM160, I don't mind getting it, only crap thing is gotta make appointment with those techs to do a line test.

Agreed. Better wait for the 1st batch subscribers' comments on the service. Even for 1 Mbps also has its ups and downs, i wonder if it were 4Mbps...?

If you don't have much download requirements, the 4mbps package is not for you, it's an overkill. It's like buying a McLaren roadster to drive around Subang Jaya during rush hour.

As for the sign up process, visit your nearest TMPoint outlet. Then at the end of the process, ask the person serving you for the name and telephone number of the installer so you can contact them directly rather than waiting for them to call you, or even worse, to show up at your doorstep when you are deep in the throes of passion with your significant other.

Pssst - what are "blue" clips? I'm underaged, so I need you to explain in detail what this means, it may entice me to ask my papa to sign up for me...

Here are some sample results from those people who've signed up. You guys didn't think I'd be posting nice things about Streamyx without basis, did you?

Clicky me, and check out post 1630, expand the "spoiler" section to see screenshots of speedtests done by the two users. Be prepared to experience your jaw dropping. There was also a screenshot of torrents downloading at 500KB/s total, but it doesn't seem to be loading for me for now.

Don't sign up expecting it to last, because they can pull the plug anytime and kill P2P traffic like they did last time when they continuously ran out of bandwidth each time they upgraded their international capacity. It's probably a ploy to get people to sign up, then when they achieve some sort of critical mass, it's back to typical TMNet aggressive-traffic-shaping behaviour again.

And of course burn those large files you downloaded to DVDs la; HDD have a 100% failure rate, it's only a matter of time; and they most often fail when you haven't done a backup and have lots of important information that you need when it crashed.

DVD sucks because it only holds 2.5G, and they don't really last forever. You're gonna have bundles and bundles of DVDs for all those torrents. Generally what I do is every couple of years, I get a higher capacity harddisk and copy all my stuff into it, use that as the data harddisk and use the old one as the OS/software harddisk.

Anyway no great loss if harddisk crash, can just look at it as an opportunity to pack it with fresh new important information

That's the correct way to do it mate!
Can't just rely on the DVD itself even if it's branded and not cap ayam.
Besides, you've fully utilized the Streamyx speed to download mmmoooovies...!
There should be some outcome of it!

 I'm not sure what DVDs you're using dude, but mine holds approx. 4.7Gb per disc, double that if it's dual layer :D The rule with DVDs is that back up need-to-keep-forever pictures/videos onto the more expensive branded DVDs, re-burn once every 5 years or so. The other stuff - if you don't access it at least once in three months, it's obsolete anyway. How many times can you watch the same movie, clean or otherwise, eh?
