Hows WM these days?

Postby firefly » Tue Mar 03, 2009 6:35 pm

I used to be a WM user from PPC 2002/2003. I am just wondering hows WM these days? From my past experience i usually get alot of hangs and need to reset everyday. That prompts me to change to Palm and I had been a fan of Palm until today (although i dont have any Palm PDA/phone anymore.

I am just wondering hows WM at WM 5 and later performs? Does it still hang as usual? I am thinking of giving WM a second chance. Thanks...

Still hangs, still needs reboots. But maybe 2 days or 3 days once. And no more worries about dead battery->hardreset.

Apart from that, same old. Move along. S60 and BB offers all WM can offer, and then some.

My Touch HD has WM 6.1 but I'm also using the SPB Mobile Shell and SPB Phone Suite applications over the top with the full skinning option of ChangeSkin from http://www.imarche.net/omnia/index.php

FANTASTIC!

I don't have to reset at all these days. Larger memory, faster processors, a more stable OS.

Yes I did have a BB for a while but that was because it was a company provided unit. Left that company and VERY happy to be back with WM, my suite of favorite applications and the the HD is the best WM device I have ever owned.

LOVE IT

WM6.1 has been pretty stable for me too. Generally these days my device only hang when I have been experimenting with new apps and stuff.

WM6.1 is stable in that it doesn't freeze much anymore, and i hardly ever have to reset it. it's also nice to have non-volatile memory and all that jazz.

however, i've had more problems than i can count trying to sync with outlook, and in this regard, it is more a liability than anything else. since i was forced to upgrade to 6.1 last november (when i had to send it in for a broken screen), i've got countless activesync errors, requiring me to set up new pst files, wipe all data, try and reinstall data, try and pick out which data items are at fault, etc. it's also extremely sensitive to other programs that modify or mess around with the outlook data, such as ringtone modifiers, etc.

i originally thought it was because some carryover data could not sync with WM6.1 but it's actually not true. after deleting a few rather large notes files it claimed it could not read, then the next file it had a problem with, was a simple reminder notes file bearing a simple name and phone number. i've now renamed my pst files MS_FGD_Liability, and my pda to winblows_mobile. juvenile, but my only reason for getting a WM device is it's seamless sync abilities with outlook. instead it's given me no end of grief in this area since WM6.1, while my WM2003 XDA II still works seamlessly.

am i pissed yes i am! because i just got through yet another wasted weekend of trying to fix something that shouldn't happen!

on the bright side, at least when i don't need to sync with outlook, like when i'm on holiday and i don't want my phone to fail, it's been reliable enough.

I guess that's progress from MicroSchlop.

Are you sure it is a WM 6.1 issue?

I sync with outlook on my work Laptop running XP via ActivSync and also my home PC running Vista ultimate via Windows Mobile Device centre.

Have not had any of the issues you have described on either system.

i hit these problems almost immediately upon getting my phone back with WM6.1, as i have a lot of 'legacy' outlook information dating back to my first pda. but since WM6.1, i just get error after error in outlook. it's especially frustrating when somethign else happens that forces me to try to restore a backup or - at worst case - reinstall everything like i had to do this weekend.

i can't recall the exact error codes, as firefox doesn't seem to save the history of the forums i visited, but here are just a few of them. it seems that this isn't an isolated issue, and i suspect it has something to do with either WM6.1 and/or activesync 4.5, and/or outlook 2007. i really don't know where the problems is, but they all started since WM6.1.

unfortunately i have a lot of 'stuff' in it that is not easily ported to another platform. also i still do like the WM platform for its customizability, and it really does fit my needs.

but they really screwed up in the latest versions of the software in my opinion. never before, have i been in danger of almost losing all my data, as before, if the pda screws up, my computer has a backup, or vice versa. these new problems have made it so that the PDA is screwed, and i almost am not able to just wholly port my old data from the computer. that's a *very* bad situation to be.

Been using winmo since the motorola mpx days then to a hp ipaq 6968 then htc and now a touch pro... though there are improvements... But lately i've fallen with the e 71 )... Works great doesnt hang and batt last for hrs... So...???... I would recommend something other than winmo... migt sound biased here but anything with microsoft sucks from their winmos to their vistas and even msn... (i'm a mac use btw)

actually i may have sounded harsh but that was because i am fresh off a whole wasted weekend, of restoring my phone from scratch.

however, i must also say that up to WM6.0, my experience with windows mobile has been rock solid, and even with the Win6.1 problems, i still prefer the WM platform for its customizability, as it is still the most open and flexible platform in terms of programs and today screen customizations.

hopefully the bugs with WM6.1 will be fixed soon. in the meantime, i've bought a nokia as a backup =P heh.

I tried from pocket pc to WM phone but now I am happier with symbian E71. Only stylus pen is missing :) but never hang, outstanding battery life, easy to sms & make calls etc.

It's not a WM6.1 issue per se. Got burned by ActiveSync a couple of times, generally it's our own fault because being forgetful and stuff, like reformatting your pc and try to sync back all your stuff to pc... and it happily delete all your WM data to match the PC.

These days I only manually backup my stuff using PIMBackup and don't bother with ActiveSync.

Normally when WM hang or freeze is either software conflicts, new application compatibility, bugs in software or the more common "x-factor" understanding.....program actually did not close when pressing 'x' but minimize for multitasking purposes. Once too many programs running behind without properly exit, memory resources used up....pda slows down, freeze or hang will occurs. That usually happens more commonly to devices with less program memory That's why need a softreset once in a while to flush out the memory.
But however all the later WM devices has more program memory and the 'x' button can be customize to actually close the program or hold to close (can still multitask) ) so it is not a problem anymore on the freezing part.
