Holux gps slim owners!

Postby Prometheus » Sun May 21, 2006 10:04 pm

It works great both with my notebook and my pda. I'm currently using Mapking software and it connects easily.
Will be tying out Garmin software with malsingmaps later..

Right now i have a question for GPS slim owners.

Can use the computer's usb port to charge the holux receiver ah?

I tried like this with the computet's usb

Plug in while the GPS is switched on. Green light on GPSr comes on and Multiple pop up windows saying that the device is not recognized.. keep continuing.. had to discontinue charging.

Plug in while GPS switched off. Green light comes on.. No pop up windows.

Switched on the GPS while it was plugged in. Power surge at USB port window briefly pops up .. and .. Windows pop up, saying unrecognized device, accepts that it doesn't know what device it is, then, a few seconds later, keeps popping up windows saying device is not recognized.. These pop ups go away if i switch off the GPSr.

Do u think it is ok to switch off the GPS and charge from computer USB port?

BUT.. it kind of defeats the purpose if i can't switch on and charge the GPSr and switch it on at the same time.. If battery low, and i am not near a power socket, how to charge?

Yes, you can charge the device using USB.
Just switch it off while charging.

The battery that comes with this receiver is crappy.
I found that when I use the battery from my Apos in this receiver it will charge from the usb even when switched on.
You can try a nokia battery. :?:

I manage to DIY the cable direct to pc serial port. The advantage is you can view the sirf chipset version using sirfdemo. I attach the screen of my sirfdemo to read my sirf chipset version. the latest version of serf is 3.1.1

So far: Flawless linking with my notebook and pda using Mapking. Setup takes no time at all!!

Setup for Garmin Que with holux BT GPSr and Ipaq 3715

Settings on GPS proxy: GPS com port Com 6 (BT serial port com 6)
Baud rate 38400

Application Com Port (GPS proxy Virtual Com port)
Baud rate 38400

Virtual Com Port 7

Above settings worked for me, but it took some tinkering around with the Com ports..

Hi zukie,

FYI, you are able to run SirfDemo over Bluetooth connection too.

I realized that it takes forever to cold star if you do it in a moving car. Its better to get a FIX first before moving a car.

takes up to 2 minutes to get a fix if cold start while moving.

Is it me or my GPS got problem?

The Usb port on the gps slim does NOT have the standard pin arrangement of a normal usb port hence if you plugged it into windows with it turned on basically windows can't make out exactly if anything at al is plugged in.

If you want to use it as a wired gps mouse on windows you'll need to buy the cable and make ur own like it's posted above... speaking of which what site has the docs about how to make ur own cable?

Anyway.. yes during a cold start u should get a fix first before u start moving or else it just gives the gps a hard time to triangulate when ur,re moving

I have read on the net before about a diy cable for the gpslim. just forgot where it is.. continue looking it'll pop up somewhere

no la.. only this.. he also got no solution.. http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=74485

maybe can buy the cable if you wnat.

You know what? I feel that the GPSlim connection via bluetooth is good. Only time it goes off is when the distance separating two is too far.. Why not just tie the GPSr and the PPC or notebook together with a lanyzrd so they don't separate too far? :D
